Left Bank
Is the exchange rate dictating that you put off that trip to Paris? Well, you just might imagine you're feeling the light breeze of the Seine as you dine at the Left Bank (http://www.leftbank.com). Enjoy market-fresh chilled oysters or perhaps some French onion soup with Emmental cheese or an heirloom beet salad. And that's just for starters. You'll suddenly feel a slight "je ne sais quoi" as you ponder your next course, perhaps some escargots before you sample the fresh-off-the-rotisserie grill dishes such as herb crusted leg of lamb with pearl onions or grilled flank steak salad with blue cheese. Try the steamed mussels, the coq au vin free-range chicken or the Nicoise salad with Ahi and a sweet sherry vinaigrette. But "S'il vous plait!" save room for dessert. Perhaps a fromage plate paired with port or a lemon tart or wedge of tarte tatin. The brasserie will occupy 6,750 square feet at the corner of California and Trinity. Current locations include Larkspur, Menlo Park, San Mateo, Pleasant Hill and Santana Row. Enjoy the seasonal menus and simple, fresh selections. Bon Appétit!

The Counter
Opening in June, Oprah Winfrey's favorite hamburger place The Counter, is all about having it your way...just with a bit more panache. You choose the ingredients from a clipboard list of mouth-watering possibilities. Established in 2005, The Counter is new twist on the burger joint, where you can order a side cocktail or wine with your fries. Step I, choose a burger (beef, turkey, veggie, chicken). Step 2, choose a cheese (Danish blue, Greek feta, gruyere, Tillamook cheddar), Step 3, choose up to 4 toppings or more premium toppings (red onion, spicy pepperoni, black olives, roasted chilies, avocado, fried onion strings, sun dried tomatoes). Step 4 choose a sauce (like honey mustard, peanut sauce, Dijon mustard, caramelized onion marmalade) and then step 5 add the bun (hamburger, English muffin, honey wheat). Top it off with a milkshake of the month, perhaps the caramel java malt with vanilla ice cream, swirled with caramel, malt, chocolate and coffee, topped with whipped cream. You get the idea. The Counter is in Suite H at the far north end of Mercer.
